2 CONT Work History:
2 CONT Chief Engineer, Crew Information Systems (6/2002 – present):
2 CONT Responsible for an Engineering group tasked with the design, implementation, deployment, an
2 CONC d customer support of a Crew Information System. This centered around an Electronic Flight Ba
2 CONC g system installed in the airplane and a Distributed Data Management (DDM) system deployed a
2 CONC t a central facilities and clients running at the airlines.
2 CONT
2 CONT The EFB hosts applications running on Type Certified partitions (written in Linux) and Operat
2 CONC ionally Approved partitions (written for Windows).
2 CONT
2 CONT These applications include the first Airport Moving Map with the GPS determined airplane posi
2 CONC tion for
2 CONT surface movement positional awareness. This required development of new GPS integrity algorit
2 CONC hms that provided availability much higher than current integrity algorithms. Other applicati
2 CONC ons are Terminal Charts, Takeoff/Landing Performance Calculation, and Electronic Documents. T
2 CONC his system also hosted the first Flight Deck Entry Video Surveillance function that allows th
2 CONC e flight crews to determine who is requesting entry to the flight deck. All of the applicatio
2 CONC ns have the ability to utilize the communication functionality of the airplane.
2 CONT
2 CONT This basic capability is to be augmented in 1Q05 to add the capability to use Terminal Wirele
2 CONC ss Local Area Networks to wirelessly load the EFB every time it lands at an equipped airport
2 CONC . This, coupled with the DDM system, will allow an airline to tag data updates to an airplan
2 CONC e (via tail number) and have the airplane automatically loaded each time it is on the ground
2 CONC . An airline-engineering group can even retrieve the current configuration of the EFB system
2 CONC , results of Performance Calculations, and EFB Fault logs from their Web-based interface in t
2 CONC heir offices. This information will be transmitted over TWLU (or other communication pathways
2 CONC ).
2 CONT
2 CONT This development was done in 14 months, under cost, on-time, and contained as much software a
2 CONC s the rest of the 777 airplane flight deck systems combined.
2 CONT
2 CONT Senior Manager, Flight Management/Satcom/Communications Management/VHF-HF Voice and Data Comm
2 CONC unications (9-2001 until 6/2002):
2 CONT Responsible for an Engineering group tasked with design, installation, and customer support o
2 CONC f Flight Management Systems for 747/757/767, Voice and Data Satellite Communications for al
2 CONC l models, Aircraft Communications Addressing/Reporting System (ACARS) and Communication Manag
2 CONC ement Units (CMU) for all models, VHF data/Voice units for all models, and HF data/voice fo
2 CONC r all models. Participate in the team that develops strategies for airplane equipage in respo
2 CONC nse to customer requests and ATC operational requirements.
2 CONT
2 CONT Chief Engineer, Air Traffic Management Architecture – (10/2000 – 9/2001):
2 CONT Responsible for an engineering group tasked with the development of operational concepts, req
2 CONC uirements, and design of systems which will increase the capacity and safety levels of the Na
2 CONC tional Airspace System (NAS). This includes terrestrial, airborne, and space-based systems. H
2 CONC eaded the effort to develop the research and analysis capabilities to use the airborne Fligh
2 CONC t Management information for Air Traffic Control use in separation management.
2 CONT
2 CONT Chief Engineer, Air Traffic Services Support – (11/95 – 10/2000):
2 CONT Responsible for strategic planning and implementation of all projects relating to Air Traffi
2 CONC c Management. These projects are centered primarily around the migration of communication an
2 CONC d navigation from terrestrial sources to satellite. This includes strategic planning, researc
2 CONC h/analysis, business case analysis for development projects, and system preliminary design (i
2 CONC ncluding space/airborne/ground interfaces).
2 CONT
2 CONT This group performs research/analysis supporting the Air Traffic Service Providers, airlines
2 CONC , and other research organizations. It has also organized a global industry strategic plannin
2 CONC g group (known as the CNS/ATM Focus Team, made up primarily of airlines) which developed a me
2 CONC thodology to define the high value upgrade path for satellite communications and navigation e
2 CONC nhancements for airborne and ground ATC systems. It supports both airline customers and air t
2 CONC raffic service providers located all over the world. Boeing has targeted air traffic manageme
2 CONC nt (with associated communications and airspace/airport analysis and operation) as a new busi
2 CONC ness stream.
2 CONT
2 CONT In that respect, ting activities were supported to identify strategic teaming and acquisitio
2 CONC n targets necessary to develop this non-traditional (for Boeing) business. This includes rese
2 CONC arch, business development sequencing, and on-site due-diligence support.
2 CONT
2 CONT Supervisor, Flight Management Computer - Avionics, (12/89 – 11/95):
2 CONT Project manager for the analysis and incorporation of software and hardware updates to the Fl
2 CONC ight Management Computer (FMC) for the 757, 767, and 747 aircraft. This is a highly integrate
2 CONC d, software
2 CONT intensive system that is the main pilot interface to the aircraft systems. Was responsible fo
2 CONC r the planning,
2 CONT specification, design, and implementation of a major enhancement to the 747-400 FMCS known a
2 CONC s the Future Air Navigation System.
2 CONT
2 CONT This was a ground-breaking, major upgrade including features to allow the aircraft to becom
2 CONC e a part of the internationl air/ground/satellite network to be used for air traffic control
2 CONC . As this was the first implemen- tation in the world, part of the development required deve
2 CONC lopment of international interface standards and brokering their world-wide acceptance. Thi
2 CONC s project was completed virtually on time and under budget. The Boeing Company is recognize
2 CONC d as the leader in safety related airborne satellite communication technology because of thi
2 CONC s project.
2 CONT
2 CONT Responsible for the 747-400 FMCS sustaining program that tracked and solved in-service proble
2 CONC ms. This position involved significant interaction with the factory, airline customers, indus
2 CONC try, and suppliers. Developed FMCS development processes and implemented those processes. I
2 CONC n 12/89, the FMCS was at the top of the Dispatch Delay list. By 4Q1994 it was no longer on th
2 CONC e list; accomplished through the development of fix package development processes (includin
2 CONC g an aggressive program to increase supplier responsibility for problem location and resoluti
2 CONC on), and development of enhanced internal software anomaly reporting within the FMCS.
2 CONT
2 CONT Developed process improvements on FANS development which substantially reduced cost and cycl
2 CONC e time. These included design and test processes that increased effectiveness of the testin
2 CONC g while reducing actual test time. Participated in team with Finance, Marketing, and Engineer
2 CONC ing to develop cost/benefit analysis for FANS which was used to validate the requirement fo
2 CONC r the development to Boeing management and airlines. Developed methodology to control and doc
2 CONC ument aircraft/ground functional integration that minimized late changes to the FMCS developm
2 CONC ent. Developed method of communication of problems to airlines that allowed them to operate m
2 CONC ore efficiently with those problems until they could be fixed.
2 CONT
2 CONT Supervisor, Systems Engineering - Avionics, (6/89 to 12/89):
2 CONT Provided direction to a group of engineers/technicians in four areas: 747-400F coordination
2 CONC , Certification Analysis and tracking, Systems Engineering methodology and tool development
2 CONC , In-service problem tracking and resolution.
2 CONT
2 CONT Manager, Software Engineering - Avionics, (2/87 to 6/89):
2 CONT Responsible for all airborne system software for the 767 and 747-400. The 747-400 was in deve
2 CONC lopment
2 CONT during this period and involved a significant software-based system upgrade to the aircraft (
2 CONC from navigation systems to in-flight entertainment). This task included the development and c
2 CONC ontrol of all of the interfacing computers on the airplane (~1000), specification control, su
2 CONC bcontractor management of the software development, and primary responsibility for certificat
2 CONC ion of the avionics software. This was a very large project that involved about 40 subcontrac
2 CONC tors, 120 engineers, and a tight schedule and budget.
2 CONT
2 CONT Directed a computing group which managed the PC and Apollo workstation networks and provide
2 CONC d system and operation support for the Interface Control Drawing Database. It was also respon
2 CONC sible for maintaining inventories and generating computing budget requirements. This group im
2 CONC plemented a successful local area network for the new Avionics facility that attached the Apo
2 CONC llos and PCs to the larger Boeing Network Architecture. It also developed a network-based Bud
2 CONC get Requirements System that greatly simplified the activities associated with developing qua
2 CONC rterly manpower estimates. Responsible for reorganization of unit after 747-400 Certificatio
2 CONC n that eliminated need for this position.
2 CONT
2 CONT Project Engineer, Display Systems - Avionics, (6/86 to 2/87):
2 CONT Responsible engineering supervisor for the development and test of CRT Primary Flight Instrum
2 CONC ents. Provided direction for modification of the Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS) f
2 CONC or the 737-300. This was a software-intensive development but encountered significant laten
2 CONC t hardware design errors. This task required management of the supplier verification effort a
2 CONC nd also required management of the hardware design error solution and test. The equipment wa
2 CONC s successfully installed on the first required airplane with full FAA certification.
2 CONT
2 CONT Software Engineering Supervisor - Avionics, (10/84 to 6/86):
2 CONT Provided direction to software engineers and technical personnel in the support of avionics c
2 CONC omputers for the 737-300 and 737-200 airplanes. The task was to monitor design and implementa
2 CONC tion quality and status. The major portion of the job was to support certification by perform
2 CONC ing software verification analysis. This group developed the computer interface control datab
2 CONC ase that handles all of the analog and digital signal interfaces on the airplane and produce
2 CONC s the Interface Control Drawing. Managed the computer budget for the Avionics division and su
2 CONC pported procurement and installation of computing equipment. Provided leadership to a hardwar
2 CONC e/software group whose task was to manage the recovery of the GPWC Windshear incorporation de
2 CONC velopment. The group received a commendation for implementing the system while avoiding the d
2 CONC elay of aircraft delivery.
2 CONT
2 CONT Lead Avionics Software Engineer, (10/82-10/84):
2 CONT Provided lead direction for several different avionics systems. These included inertial senso
2 CONC r, radio navigation, performance data, and control systems. This job entailed the planning an
2 CONC d control of the software development process, including requirements analysis, design analys
2 CONC is, and test coverage analysis. This effort included identification of program risks in term
2 CONC s of certification and in-service problems due to insufficient software control and testing.
2 CONT

2 CONT This system has been deployed to five 777 airline customers (as of 3/2006). The system is cur
2 CONC rently being retrofited to 747 and 737 customers.
2 CONT
2 CONT Since this system must interface to the airline host systems, it uses both ACARS and Interne
2 CONC t Protocol communication. One of the primary communication pathways is Airport Wireless Commu
2 CONC nication. One of my groups is responsible for designing and implementing the ground infrastru
2 CONC cture to support this communication. This group has developed a proprietary method of desig
2 CONC n and implementation provides mobile coverage with and order of magnitude fewer access points
2 CONC . This airport system has a patented access point management system and provides coverage ou
2 CONC t to the runways.
2 CONT
2 CONT In cooperation with Singapore Airlines, the Economic Development Board of Singapore, and Chan
2 CONC gi Airport; we installed a demonstration system which provided airplane access to the runways
2 CONC , taxiways, and gates at Terminal 2 using only 9 access points.
2 CONT
2 CONT The Crew Information System allows the airplane to be completely integrated with airline host
2 CONC ed clients, interfaced with existing airline systems, and My Boeing Fleet. This system allow
2 CONC s the airlines to have connectivity with their airplanes (in a secure environment)which allow
2 CONC s information exchange that enables optimal operation.
